MILWAUKEE (AP / WMTV) – A toddler and two adults died after their vehicle crashed into a Milwaukee River during a police chase.

Milwaukee Police identified the three people killed on New Year's Day after a pursuit ended when a Black Chevy Trailblazer entered the Kinnickinnic River after being involved in several armed robberies.

Various Tuesday found the bodies of a 2 year old Annamelia Hernandez, and a 29 year old Charles Barefield.

Shannon Nehmer, her 19 year old mother, died Monday night after being found in the water, but declared dead at the scene.

According to the police, the first armed robbery took place around 7 pm December 31st near 14th and Greenfield Ave. One victim indicated that he was checking for liquids in his vehicle when three suspects approached a black Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicle and asked for money under the threat of a weapon fire. Police said the victim was stuck to the face by one of the suspects before getting back into the SUV and running away.

Twenty-five minutes later, the police are called in 1600 block of 23rd Street for a ShotSpotter call. The police found two victims on the scene. Police learned that two suspects had approached the victims with a semi-automatic pistol, demanding valuables. One of the suspects pushed one of the two victims to the ground and started to kick them in the head. Police said that a citizen intervened with a machete and started pursuing the suspects on foot. One of the suspects returned and began shooting, police said no one had been hit by the shots.

The police learned that these robberies were linked and involved the same suspects and the same suspicious vehicle.

A few hours later, at 8:30 pm, the vehicle was spotted and a lawsuit was launched near Comstock and Arrow Street. The pursuit reached a speed of 80 to 100 miles at the time and headed east to Greenfield before being interrupted by the agents. The vehicle then crashed into the KK River, submerging 30 feet deep.

The Milwaukee Fire Department Diving Team responds and the body of Shannon Nehmer, age 19, is found.

MFD officials said that a diver almost lost his life while he was trying to fire Nehmer from the water. It has been reported that divers encountered difficulties on the spot due to adverse weather conditions. A diver was able to enter the water and descend 30 feet, where he was able to locate Nehmer. The diver then became entangled in the debris and tried to break free. MPD stated that they were using a "rope signal" and that when the diver in the water was not pulling the rope, other divers took it to the surface. Dazed and confused, the diver has a hold on Nehmer when first responders strove to implement rescue measures.

Officials said that attempts to recover the vehicle in the water on Monday night were unsuccessful and were to be postponed until Tuesday, when appropriate equipment and personnel would be available. A harness and a crane were used to remove a vehicle from the river on Tuesday afternoon. Barefield, 29, and Hernandez, 2 years old.

According to the police, Nehmer and Barefield were involved in the first robberies, with a third suspect. Police said the other suspect had been arrested and that they would present the case to the Advocate General in the coming days.

A surveillance video shows the car driving and the driver losing control before the vehicle crashes into the river. We do not know who drove the vehicle.
