Archaeologists have reported an important discovery: they managed to find the Shipet-Totek temple in Mexico.

In Aztec mythology, Shipet-Totek is a deity. with the renewal of nature, agriculture and the seasons changes. His name can be translated as "What is covered with skin."

Traditionally, local clerics paid tribute to him by wearing a mask of the victims' skin.

Objects that archaeologists were able to retrieve in the state of Puebla, dating from 900 -1150 years AD. Probably the oldest items on Shipet-Totek that can be found in Mexico.

At the Institute of Anthropology and National History of Mexico, it is said that the ceramic image of 85 centimeters of divinity was found in a relatively good state, although some elements of the product have been separated from each other.

"From a sculptural point of view, it is a very beautiful thing," says Chief archaeologist Nomei Castillo.

Two huge skulls carved from volcanic rock were also found on the site. The weight of each of them is about 200 kilograms

Archaeologists suggest that the skulls served as a cache for two holes located before the sacrificial altars, where it is possible that the people sacrificed to Shipet- Totek were buried. Materials found on the excavation site were sent to the laboratory for further research.

It is thought that the mention of Shipet-Totek appeared for the first time during the pre-adectic period. As a rule, he was represented in sandals, with a bandage on the hips and covered with human skin.

The Aztec strip-tease festival called Tlakashipuualitskila was dedicated to Shipet-Totek.

The main event of the festival is the fight for gladiators, in which, the rule was taken by people captured during the war. After the battle, they removed the skin and their heart – thus giving Shipet-Totek honor.

The skin itself was clasped in her arms by the clergy who had used it during ritual ceremonies.
