An Illinois police officer was hit and killed on Saturday while he was investigating a road accident, police said. Leo Schmitz, director of the Illinois State Police, said at a press conference that Saturday night there had been a car accident and stopped to investigate.

An on-site nurse performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived at the site.

Lambert was pronounced dead at a hospital around 7:25 pm, the Chicago Tribune reported.
