DETROIT (AP) – A Navy veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder was arrested for three days before federal authorities learned that he was a Michigan-born American citizen. , lawyers said Wednesday.
27-year-old Jilmar Ramos-Gomez lives in the Grand Rapids area. According to the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, he was released on December 17 from a Calhoun County Detention Center after his personal records were handed over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"Why did they think he was a non-citizen? do you confuse it with someone else? Who knows, "said ACLU's attorney, Miriam Aukerman." It's an extremely vulnerable person with a mental illness. "

Ramos-Gomez was taken to a detention center in Battle Creek, within a 113 km radius. He was released three days after lawyer Richard Kessler contacted ICE on behalf of his family.
Aukerman said that Ramos-Gomez's treatment was "appalling".
Ramos-Gomez receives mental health care and is not treated. t available for an interview on Wednesday. He was a corporal in the Marines and was rewarded for his services in Afghanistan. The ACLU stated that its PTSD had played a role in the disorders at the hospital.
Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young defended her department, saying agents do not have the power to check if ICE wants to detain someone. Nevertheless, she described this situation as a "very regrettable situation" for Ramos-Gomez.
"We think this case highlights the need for a reform of immigration policy," said the sheriff.
