Severe thunderstorms hit the Great South on Saturday afternoon, a thunderstorm that caused a tornado that could cause severe damage to the city. Wetumpka. , Alabama.
Photos on social media show damage to buildings throughout the city. Injuries have also been reported.
Wetumpka is located about 30 minutes northeast of Montgomery, Alabama.
According to the Montogmery announcer, Wetumpka Mayor Jerry Willis said that damage had been caused to the city's police department and to a senior citizens' center.
While most severe thunderstorms have weakened, there could be a violent thunderstorm locally in the early evening in southeastern Alabama, southwestern Georgia and the surrounding areas of the Florida, according to Kristina Pydynowski, Senior Meteorologist at AccuWeather.
A curfew has reportedly been announced for downtown Wetumpka.
Message from the Wetumpka Sheriff's Office: Wetumpka has announced an 18-hour curfew. for the city center. The roads must be clear so that the workers can go to the scene.

"Citizens are urged to stay away from downtown Wetumpka and the affected areas along the storm track", said officials in a statement. "Unnecessary travel prevents emergency personnel from cleaning roadways, power lines, trees and debris."
A shelter was installed at Wetumpka High School. Temperatures should drop overnight.
