Every year on January 20 is celebrated the day Ivanov (according to the old style – January 7). In the Orthodox calendar of the church, this date is dedicated to the Cathedral of the Forerunner and the Baptist of Lord John.
Ivanov Day of January 20: Main Ban on Public Holiday
Another holiday is sometimes called Brazhnik, because that day it was decided to "extinguish" all the evil that reigns on the Earth. Before you sit down, you had to drink the water of baptism to not be sick all year round.
The end of the holidays meant a return to normal life. It was necessary to come to the meeting with the work: "After John the Baptist who does not do it, they strike at the shoulder". However, in some places, the day was still festive, no work was done.
In addition, certain prohibitions ceased to exist that day: it was still possible to spin, weave, sew with woolen threads and cut livestock. On John, our ancestors performed the ritual feeding of cattle. The pets were treated with bread with salt or pancakes "to behave well".
During this period, the mass celebration was celebrated. Accepted was "drink" maiden happiness. If, on this day, "washes" the sorrow of the marriage without love, then in the family life, the pregnant woman waits for small tears.
In addition, our ancestors predicted the climate of Ivan: a dry and cold weather on January 20 was a rainy summer and a dull and snowy weather – a rich crop. Rich bread was promised and morning fog that day.
The beer is cooked that day, but it should be used in small quantities. According to the belief, a little drunk alcohol protects from grief and tears. If it exceeds the norm, then the house will be unhappy.
Yet, on Ivan, it is still forbidden to work. The fact is that in the evening, according to tradition, young people are satisfied with the recent evenings.
It should be noted that the day of Ivanov is strictly forbidden to wash, because protection is carried away and a person may be prone to deception.
