Google Translate accused of sexism: what we know about it

[ad_1]

A Google translator became sexist, a Brazilian researcher discovered such detail.

Scientists from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul have selected 12 languages with no grammatical category, including Hungarian, Finnish and Swahili. Yoruba, Japanese and Estonian.

Linguists composed several sentences using the formula "X is a Y", where X is a neutral pronoun in the third person and Y is a name for a profession. Among the professions were: a doctor, a programmer, a wedding planner – and even more than a thousand variants of 22 oblasts. The proposals were then translated into English.

It turned out that the translator was "stuffed" with prejudices: for example, the translation of the service "ő egy ápoló" ("he / she nurse / nurse") was "she is a nurse", and "y egy tudós" ("he / she scientist") like "he is scientist"

In 71% of the cases, the translator returned the representatives of the technical professions to the masculine, in 4% – to the woman, in the other cases – middle class.
