Elwell confirmed that there had been injuries. The suspect was arrested, the police said.
It was unclear whether the injured were bank employees or customers inside the bank during the incident.
The incident began when a man called the police at 12:36. and said he had fired shots inside the bank, police said. Sebring police and representatives of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene, police said.
The first negotiations to remove barricaded people from the bank did not succeed, so a SWAT team entered the bank and continued the negotiations. . The suspect was eventually delivered to the SWAT team, the police said.
There was no danger to the surroundings, the police said. US-27 was closed both ways near the bank due to the incident. Law enforcement officials will provide more details at 4:30 pm ET press conference, said Elwell
Two hospitals in the area, the Highlands Regional Medical Center and the Florida Heartland, announced that they had not done so yet.
"We work closely with the authorities and seek to care for all those affected," said SunTrust Communications Officer Sue Mallino. "We will provide more information as soon as we can."
Family members, colleagues and friends seeking to reunite with loved ones after the accident gathered at the nearby lakeside inn, according to Yanique Blackellar, the manager of the reception of the hostel.
