President Trump apparently can not say anything: the closure of the government, which has lasted for a month, has not yet led to the desired border-wall; his second speech on the state of the Union was canceled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; and now, three major polls have found that his approval ratings have fallen sharply.
A poll Politico-Morning Consult, published Wednesday, showed that the president now had an approval rate of 40%, a decrease of 17 points from the last survey. .
Two other major polls, from CBS News and the Associated Press-NORC, revealed that Trump now has a confidence rating of 36% and 34%, respectively. The new AP data is down 8% from last month, while CBS figures are down three points.
According to AP figures, this latest approval rating is the lowest of the two years of Trump's presidency.
Much of the disapproval comes from the partial closure of the government, which will enter its thirty-third day Thursday. According to an AP survey, 60% of Americans said that Mr. Trump "had a great deal of responsibility" in this closure and 36% accused Republicans of Congress. Only 31% of respondents thought the Democrats were to blame.
Similarly, Politico's figures revealed that 54 percent accused Trump and the congressional Republicans of being behind the closure, while only 34 percent blamed the Democrats. Investigators at the Washington plant found that these figures "have remained relatively stable since the beginning of the closure"
. A partisan dispute – such as one that has the theme of the State of the Union speech – may well go unnoticed at the national level, the closure has had an impact on the daily lives of many Americans.
According to CNBC, the closure affected approximately 800,000 federal employees, of whom approximately 380,000 were on leave and 420,000 were forced to work without pay. Many have turned to secondary jobs such as driving Uber, replacing teaching or babysitting to make ends meet. The New York Times reported that over two thousand federal employees turned to the GoFundMe crowdfunding site for financial assistance.
As such, 55% of Americans say they are "worried" about the closure and 51% say it is a "major problem", according to the figures of Politico and D & C. # 39; AP.
"The responsibility lies largely with the president because he made the decision," said the respondent and a self-identified Republican, Sandra Olson, of Northwood, Iowa, said. "We have never seen in my life such a mean, attacked and slandered president."
The president's performance figures particularly suffered among self-identified independent voters, who recorded a disapproval rate of 71%, according to the AP. survey. This figure, noted the AP, is also "among its lowest points" of the Trump presidency. Politico's poll also revealed a disapproval rate of 60% of independent voters.
Trump's support within his party, however, remained relatively unscathed. Figures from Politico and AP revealed that about 80 percent of Republicans approved Trump's performance.
