At a press conference Thursday night, Brittany Hathaway thanked the 600 or so volunteers who had gone looking for Casey Lynn Hathaway after her disappearance in her grandmother's garden on Tuesday.

A search and rescue professional, Shane Grier, described the boy's discovery at the press briefing. Investigators who answered the tip had heard Casey call his mother on Thursday and the captain of Chocowinity EMS had then found him about 50 yards (45 meters) in the woods, entangled in brambles.

"He was cold But the more we warmed him up, the more he became active," Grier said. "For the conditions, I think it's pretty good."

Authorities reported that Casey was not dressed enough for the weather, as temperatures hovering around the frost mingled with intermittent rains. Hugh Hughes County Sheriff Hughes said he was concerned about the sinkholes and deepwater ditches in the area. Divers were sent to assess the nearby ponds. Volunteers were even turned down for Thursday's search because of security concerns.

"We do not want to turn an incident into another incident," said Joe Monette of the North Carolina Forest Service. "It's a set of ditches, water – you name it, it's here."

The FBI, state investigators, and the US Navy Base Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point joined the effort to locate Casey. Hughes says the researchers covered 89 hectares (220 acres).

Still unclear where Casey was during those two days and what kept him safe. Hughes thinks Casey has moved.

When he was found, he was still wearing his jacket, zipped. He was taken to the hospital for assessment.

"We brought Casey into his family, as we had announced," he said. "I could not be happier with the way it turned out."
