According to CNN, layoffs hit several media this week, resulting in the loss of about 1,000 jobs in the media industry.
BuzzFeed has eliminated approximately 15% of its workforce, more than 200 employees, and Verizon, owner of HuffPost, Yahoo and AOL, has announced a 7% reduction in its digital media business jobs. Gannett has also cut jobs in his newspapers nationwide.
BuzzFeed was recently scrutinized after reporting that Trump had ordered his long-time lawyer, Michael Cohen, to lie in Congress. The story, however, gave rise to a rare statement by special advocate Robert Mueller, whose office said the article was "inaccurate".
Trump frequently rebels against the press, calling the media "fake news" and accusing journalists of inventing sources and quotes.
