The actor "Empire" Jussie Smollett was hospitalized after being brutally assaulted by two men early Tuesday morning as part of a police investigation into a possible crime of hatred.
Chicago police told Fox News in a statement, a 36-year-old actor in the 36-year-old "Empire" television show told them that he was walking at 2 am, so that he was approached by two strangers who shouted "racist and homophobic insults".

According to police, the actor reportedly told them that the men had hit him in the face with hands and had paid him a unknown chemical substance before wrapping around his neck with a rope.

The alleged victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she is treated and in good condition, the police said.
"Given the seriousness of the allegations, we take this investigation very seriously and see it as a possible hate crime," the Chicago police said in a statement. "The detectives are currently working on collecting videos, identifying potential witnesses and establishing an investigation schedule."
A Smollett representative did not respond to Fox News' invitation.
Smollett plays the openly gay musician Jamal Lyon in the Fox series. The actor told Ellen DeGeneres in 2015 that he identified himself as gay but did not talk about his personal life in public.
"I chose not to talk about my personal life, I just wanted it to be clear, but it was very important for me to tell you clearly about your program at that time in the world, and that's where I am, "he said.
According to Variety, Smollett would be in Chicago to perform at a show on Saturday.
