An Arizona Uber driver is recovering after a passenger would have sliced his throat Wednesday night , according to police documents.
Francisco J. Diaz, 45, was arrested Thursday, according to a police report, for attempted second degree murder and aggravated assault.
An unidentified Uber driver picked up Diaz at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Goodyear, Arizona on Wednesday. According to the report, the driver told police that while they were approaching their destination, Diaz went to a house and said, "There." The police report then states that he felt something slip on his neck and "as if a hot liquid was running down his neck," says the police report.
The driver and Diaz reportedly began to struggle, but the driver told the police that Diaz had left the vehicle and fled. The driver, who injured his neck and hands, called the police and was rushed to a hospital where he received 20 staples across the throat, according to News 12, affiliated with NBC News.
"I've been doing it for two years, and I never thought it could happen in my life," the driver told News 12. The driver told News 12 not to reveal his identity, fearing for his safety.
Diaz told the police that he feared the driver Uber would have hurt him and admitted he pulled out a knife and threw him on the driver, cutting his hands with a knife, police said.
Uber on Friday issued a statement to News 12, in response to the incident.
Experienced driver is scary. Nothing is more important than the safety of the drivers and riders we serve. We are relieved that he is recovering and that he is ready to help the police in his investigation, "said the company.
