A federal officer stationed at an Arizona border post shot dead a driver who had refused to stop and allegedly attempted to send him back to Mexico, according to reports local.

At approximately 7:00 pm A CBP statement said an unidentified US Customs and Border Patrol officer assigned to the DeConcini Passage in Nogales, Arizona told a vehicle heading south to park toward South.

CBP stated that the ongoing investigation into the case had prevented the agency from sharing more information.

Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino told the Arizona Daily Star that a van had broken into Mexico after being asked to stop and try to overthrow the federal agent.

The CBP officer fired at least once on the driver, but the truck continued to cross the harbor and get to Mexico before crushing it on the other side. The Mexican Federal Police took the driver out of the truck. A passenger was arrested and unharmed during the shooting.

CBP stated that the driver was shot and was taken to a hospital in the state of Sonora, Mexico. It was not clear if the man survived the shooting.

The harbor was closed for four hours and traffic was redirected to a level crossing near Nogales. The Nogales police redirected traffic to the Mariposa entrance port before reopening the port of DeConcini around 11 pm.

The Domestic Security Investigations of the Office of Professional Liability of the Border Police Bureau of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement both investigate the use of force by the officer.
