Another wave of snow hit the state of Washington this week, leaving officials scrambling to get people out of the street and the governor to declare the state of emergency.
Nearly 20 million people in the northwest are on storm alert Saturday morning while an extra two to one inches of snow will fall in Seattle, according to CNN weather forecaster Haley Brink.
The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport posted 6.4 inches of snow on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. This is the second largest amount of snow recorded in the region in one day in 20 years – and there is still more to come.
This is only the fourth time the region has recorded six inches of snow since 1991. Seattle displays an average 6.8 inches of snow over a full year.
Washington takes precautions
More snowfall is expected Saturday and officials are ready. Washington Governor Jay Inslee said the state of emergency Friday as the region prepares for whitewash, high winds and freezing air.
The Seattle Police Service tweeted that additional resources were being allocated to heat shelters for the homeless.
With the proclamation of the state of emergency, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) limits the number of hours commercial vehicle drivers may be on the road. Governors collecting or delivering bulk milk products or road salt from the FMCSA are exempt, said the governor.
