DENVER – A FBI agent who dances accidentally shot a man in the leg after turning around in a Denver bar will avoid Prison aggression Friday third degree.
Chase Bishop, 30, entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors and was sentenced to two years of probation, the Denver Post reported. He must also pay more than $ 1,600 in fines and court costs.
A sequence of the June 2 shooting at Mile High Spirits and Distillery shows Bishop in a circle of people before doing the backflip. The revolver falls to the ground halfway and is discharged as Bishop picks it up. The officer then puts his weapon in a belt holster and goes away with his hands up.
"My ultimate goal in life is to care for, protect and serve people," Bishop said in court on Friday. "I never thought that the result of my actions would lead to something like this."
In November, he pleaded not guilty to second-degree aggression, punishable by up to 16 years in prison.
Bishop, who will be on probation in Georgia, was in Denver on business with the FBI and was on leave at the time of the shooting. FBI spokeswoman Kelsey Pietranton declined to say whether he would continue working at the agency.
The man who was killed, 24-year-old Tom Reddington, spoke emotionally to the court about the loss of his job in an Amazon warehouse after chronic pain and concern that he may never be able to ever again run.
"I did months of physical therapy," he said. "I asked for advice.However, being in public, especially seeing the law enforcement with firearms, puts me very uncomfortably."
Reddington added that he did not keep personal grudge against Bishop. "I've also been doing stupid things in bars to impress girls," he said.
