MELBOURNE, Florida – A child was rushed to hospital on New Year's Day after falling into the rhino show at Brevard Zoo, officials said.
The Brevard County Relief Service announced that the child had been transported to the hospital a trauma alert status. The state of the child is unknown at the moment. Firefighters say that the child's mother was also taken to an Orlando hospital for treatment.

According to officials of the Brevard Zoo, the child was injured on Wednesday afternoon when A meeting with Rhino, a practical and educational experience with the white rhinos at Brevard Zoo. During the meeting, participants and rhinos are separated by a series of steel poles. According to witnesses, the child stumbled and fell between two poles. At this point, the muzzle of at least one of the rhinos has come into contact with the child.
Zoo officials said Brevard Zoo has been providing this experience every day without incident since 2009.
"Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our guests and our heart goes out to the family" said Keith Winsten, executive director of the zoo. "Safety has always been of paramount importance to us and we are suspending these meetings until we have thoroughly examined our processes and procedures to prevent this from happening again."
