A New York man was charged with murder and hate crimes on Friday for allegedly using a hammer to kill Three employees in a Chinese restaurant,
Arthur Martunovich, 34, told police he was targeting Asian men during the brutal January 15 bombing of the Seaport Buffet restaurant in Brooklyn, saying his destruction would protect him. One way or another Asian women assault, said the authorities. A suspect acquired this twisted view of Asian men and women after watching movies, police sources told NBC New York.
Martunovich, Caucasian and residing near the Sheepshead Bay restaurant, was indicted on Friday on 21 counts of indictment of first degree murder, six counts of second degree murder as a hate crime and six counts of second degree murder, prosecutors said
When Martunovich arrived at the restaurant, he told a Latin American worker that he was safe before attacking. his Asian victims with hammers, prosecutors said.
Martunovich told the police that "the Chinese men are awful" and that they "hold their women captives", according to court documents released after his indictment.
"I left my apartment with the hammer," said Martunovich to the police, according to the court's records. "I brought the hammer to prove my love to women, I threw the hammer but I do not remember it."
Chief Fufai Pun, 34, died shortly after the attack. 60-year-old owner Kheong Ng-Thang and 50-year-old director Tsz Mat Pun have died of their injuries,
"This was a violent attack , horrible and poignant against three completely innocent men and workers who were targeted were Asian, "said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. "Sheepshead Bay, like all Brooklyn, celebrates its diversity and will not tolerate vicious and hateful attacks in its community."
Defense lawyer Ed Mandery described his client as "very sick."
"It's a horrible situation." Said Mandery. "It's hard to comment on that.This is not an evil man, he's a sick man."
