A Milwaukee police officer was shot dead Wednesday morning while he was on duty, while he was executing a search warrant, officials said.
The killed officer is the third policeman in Milwaukee to die in the performance of his duties over the past eight months, said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett at a conference Press.
The officer, identified Wednesday night as Matthew Rittner, 35, was a veteran of the department for 17 years, said Milwaukee deputy police chief Michael Brunson.
Rittner, who won the Valor Medal in 2016, is survived by his wife and young son, police said
"I am filled with sorrow for this unnecessary waste," said Barrett. "anger for the individual who took the life of this bravery e officer."
Police executed a search warrant Wednesday at 9:17 am for illegal sale of firearms and drugs, officials said.
During the execution of the warrant, the agents announced themselves many times. While they were trying to open the door, shots were fired, police said.

Barrett reminded residents to be thankful and grateful to all the law enforcement officers of the state who have " put their life on the line every day for us. "
Brunson described the event as an "extremely difficult time" and said the department was asking for prayers.
The suspect was identified Wednesday night as 26-year-old Jordan Fricke from Milwaukee, Brunson said, adding that he was the subject of the search warrant.
Among those who expressed their condolences were Milwaukee's first responders at the FBI's Milwaukee office and city firefighters.
