FORT WADSWORTH, Staten Island (WABC) –
A New York City police officer is hospitalized after being shot in the stomach following a showdown with a suspect in Staten Island on Sunday night.
Police investigate the possibility of such an attack.
Eyewitness News learned that the incident had been filmed by a police body camera, the suspect apparently shouting at me "shooting at me" while he was approaching the police with a knife 10 inches.
Authorities say that the man was shot while he refused to drop the weapon, even after hitting him with a Taser.
"I'm shaken," said neighbor Virginia Sturge. "I still can not believe it."
This happened shortly before 10 pm Sunday on Bridge Court in Fort Wadsworth.
Sturge said he was out of his home to find a chaotic scene. The police were confronting the owner's husband after reporting disorderly behavior.
bang, bang, bang, and saw the cop out asking for reinforcements, "she said. "So I had to go inside the house."
Police say the suspect was intoxicated and the police fired 10 to 12 shots. They are still investigating whether the suspect had a firearm, but so far no firearms have been found.
The officer was hit by a shootout and he remains hospitalized in a serious but stable condition.
According to police, these types of situations are among the most dangerous.
"There are two calls on the radio that really make police officers think about the work they're about to do," said Police Commissioner James O'Neill. "One of them concerns jobs involving emotionally disturbed people, and the other calls for domestic violence."
The authorities claim that it was both. The police have not yet released the body video, and the man 's identity has not yet been revealed.
"You can see a man trying to override what we believe to be his wife and who shows up in front of the agents," chief Dermot inspectors. Shea says. "You hear many times:" Shoot me, shoot me, shoot me. "
The neighbors said they were shocked.
"It's a bit outrageous," said Jason Lau, a local resident. "It's been 15 years since I live in this small town, and it's the first time I've heard about something like this – it's a bit crazy."
