WASHINGTON (NBC) – A mayor of Alaska and his mother were killed by a bus on Wednesday night in the nation's capital.
Monica Adams Carlson, 61, of Skagway, and her mother, 85-year-old Cora Louise Adams, of Elbe Washington, was struck by the bus while he was walking near the Archives building National, in downtown Washington, DC
Carlson is listed as Mayor of Skagway City on the city's website.
The accident occurred just before 10 pm at 700 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, police said. The two women were taken to the hospital but died as a result of their injuries.
The company Eyre Bus, Tour & Travel, issued a statement on the accident:
"Eyre Bus, Tour & Travel wishes to express our sorrow and We cooperate fully with the authorities to investigate this incident. Eyre places the safe transportation of our customers as well as those with whom we share the road as number one priority, "said a statement sent by
NBC reports that the investigation is still ongoing.
The Municipality of Skagway issued a statement Thursday afternoon:

The Governor of Alaska, Mike Dunleavy and the First Lady Rose Dunleavy, presented their condolences.
"Rose and I join the Skagway community in mourning tragic and unexpected deaths," Dunleavy said in a statement that "Mayor Carlson was a dedicated public servant and proud of his community. The loss of Skagway is the loss of Alaska. "
Governor Dunleavy ordered his flags to fly to the half-staff in the honor of Mayor Carlson on Tuesday, January 1, 2019. Flags are in half-staff until December 30th in honor of George HW Bush and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
