A young New Jersey volunteer firefighter was killed on Christmas morning when her car fell on a railing while she was answering an emergency call.
Natalie Dempsey, 21, worked for the Mizpah Volunteer Fire Company 18-2 and was the Vice President of the organization. The company announced its death on its Facebook page at 8:30 Tuesday.
Dempsey was driving his 2001 Honda Accord to a call just after 6 am in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, when she apparently lost control and crossed a barrier and left the road, according to the station. New York ABC WABC.
"The Mizpah Fire Company must announce the death of Natalie Dempsey, Firefighter / Vice President," the company said in a statement. Dempsey was pronounced dead on the spot and was the only one on board the car, WABC reported. Her car was only found when her own fire department stopped to assist other officials at the scene of the accident when Dempsey reported the initial fire.
The Mays Landing Fire Department, which works with Mizpah volunteers, responded to the accident. The department called it "vibrant" and "always smiling". The two companies shared photos of Dempsey, one with a big smile dressed in her uniform and equipment, and another where she poses in a playful way, covered with fire-fighting foam.
