The TSA's statement in the fifth week of the longest government shutdown ever recorded underscored the particular impact of the financial stalemate on the country's airports and the employees conducting the unpaid security checks.
According to the release, despite the high rate of unplanned absences, waiting times were "within the normal timelines provided by the TSA" of 30 minutes in the standard lanes and 10 minutes for the TSA PreCheck circulars. The statement acknowledged that "some airports have had longer waiting times than usual".
While national phone numbers are made public, the TSA management sent a memo last week advising senior agency officials at airports not to publicly disclose the details of each airport.
"Do not provide specific stopover data at your airport," says the e-mail. "You can say that you had more calls initially, but in partnership with the airport and the airlines, you are able to manage people and resources to ensure effective security."
