Adam Schiff says Mueller's investigation could be lacking in a key area

H Adam Schiff, Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, asked Sunday whether Special Advocate Robert Mueller had adequately investigated President Trump's financial dealings with a German bank, reinforcing his position in favor of a new House headed by a Democrat who would start his own investigation. the finances of the president.

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," the California Democratic Congressman said his concerns stemmed from a report in April by the New York Times that Trump would have attempted Mueller after being informed that his special counsel had assigned Deutsche Bank. According to the same report, Trump only backed down when Mueller's office informed its legal advisers and lawyers that the information was false.

The president warned that Mueller investigators would cross a "red line" if they sought to investigate his personal finances and business relationships. Deutsche Bank made loans to Trump in the 1990s after US lenders objected to the company after a multitude of bankruptcies.

"If the special council has not summoned Deutsche Bank to appear, it can not conduct a major investigation into money laundering," Schiff said. "So that's what concerns me, that this red line is applied, whether by the Deputy Attorney General [Rod Rosenstein] or by another part of the Department of Justice. But that leaves the country exposed.

Schiff announced last week that the intelligence committee of the House of Representatives, now at its side, would embark on an in-depth investigation into Trump's and Russia's financial transactions.

This investigative effort includes a review of Trump's financial ties with Deutsche Bank, which received an "investigation" from the House Intelligence Committee and the House Financial Services Committee, led by Representative Maxine Waters , D-Calif.

Schiff's investigative discussions sparked strong reprimands from Trump, who last week called him a "political hacker" who was engaging in "presidential harassment."

Schiff defended the Trump Finance Intelligence Committee investigation. "With respect to the affairs of the chair, our committee does not want to know if he is a tax cheat or is not worth what he says he is," Schiff said. "What interests us, is if the president has trade relations with Russia such that it compromises the United States?"

He also asserted that the committee had no choice but to conduct another investigation parallel to Mueller's, rather than wait for the special. council office to complete his work.

"If we had been waiting to do one of our investigative work as part of the Mueller investigation, we would have waited a year and a half," Schiff said. "And we have a distinct, independent and important responsibility: to inform the country of what has happened."
