Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) adds to the mob of calls for the resignation of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, outraged by a racist photo in his medical school yearbook.
Democrat resigned, arguing that "those who try to help him stumble deserve that one lingers there".
"If you can not understand how painful this is for American society, let alone the state of Virginia, take the time to read this weekend," she added, recommending as a starting point "Between the world and me" from the former Atlantic journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates.
On Friday, the kickback was triggered by Northam's alleged appearance in the 1984 photo of a man with a black face juxtaposed in a Ku Klux Klan outfit. Although the governor initially admitted to being one of the two individuals, he has since reviewed the statement, now claiming that it was not at all safe to appear in the photo.
However, he noted that he had once painted his face with waxing while disguised as Michael Jackson for a dance contest.
Of course, the answer seems to have aggravated the situation. Ocasio-Cortez, who has often been criticized for his daring as a newly elected representative, is only one of the last politicians to publicly denounce Northam as his bipartisan support increases for his resignation.
Despite the controversy, the governor confirmed Saturday his intention to serve the remainder of his term, but did not wish to leave his post. His term of office should last until 2021.
