Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) responded to President Trump in denouncing socialism in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday night. In an appearance on MSNBC shortly after, Ocasio-Cortez said that Trump "was losing sight of the problems" and that is why he launched an "ad hominem" attack on socialism. She said that he had attacked socialism and linked it to Venezuela as a means of "confusing the public".
"What did you say about the president's aggressive statement about Venezuela tonight, and he talked about the socialist country and how we will never be a socialist country." It was rather truculent, but it tied the notion of socialism to this particular regime. What do you think of the president, why did he do that? "Chris Matthews of MSNBC asked.
"I think he has to do it because he has the impression of – he feels lost on all fronts," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Every policy proposal we have adopted and presented to the American public has been extremely popular, even with a majority of Republican voters supporting what we are talking about."
"I think he's losing himself on the issues he sees himself losing on the wall of the southern border, and he needs to grab an ad hominem attack and that's his way of the do, "said the MP. "What we need to realize is that it is a problem of authoritarian rule with respect to democracy, so in order to try to dissuade or dissuade people from the smell of the trail, must actually create and baffle the audience. And I think that's exactly what he's trying to do.
