In Bortniansky's opera there are two opposing forces: Eodonida and Aretea The first tells Alcides the world of passion – entertainment and pleasures.The second warns that there are many dangers and trials in the path of life, and to overcome them, a lot of effort is needed.It's not easy to make a choice for Alcid, but he eventually overcome the temptation ion, choosing between the ratio and the emotio in favor of the reason. Thus, the quintessence of the opera "Alcid" is the question of whether the man is completely free in his choice.
In Bortniansky's music faithfully conveyed the spiritual struggle of Alcid, clearly depicted the images of Eodonides and Aretias. There is no outside action in this work – it's an allegory of opera that gives a lesson in morality.
Musicologists speak of the genre of "Alcida" as an opera series with a significant influence of innovative currents that brought drama closer to opera. In particular, contrary to the traditions of the series, in the opera – only four characters (parts countertenor, tenor, lyric and dramatic soprano). The image of the protagonist is revealed in the development, showing different states of his soul. The pioneering features include the tendency to dramatize the recitatives, in particular, the experiences and doubts of the protagonist are disclosed through accompanying accompaniment (accompanied by – T.K.).
