"I just want to remind you that it's been a little over three weeks," she says in the video. "Trump is now ordering … federal government employees to return to work without being paid … It's serious … Our country is in a hell right now, all for a … wall."
Cardi B says that she feels anxious and helpless in the face of the long-lasting closure.
"I have the feeling that we must act," she says. "I do not know what kind of action … because it's not what I'm doing … but … I'm scared."
A few hours after she posted the video on Instagram, there were more than 8 million people, including nearly 40 million, who applauded her for using her platform to address political issues. Others left comments on how the closure affected their households.
While the video went around social media, some Democratic lawmakers wondered if they should not share it.
"We are trying to decide whether to retweet the CardiB video," commented Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii.
"Oh, I had the same argument with myself 30 minutes ago!" Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut intervened.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his feelings.
"Guys, I'm still holding my breath, are you going to RT Cardi B or not?" he tweeted. Schatz told him that they had decided not to share it because "it would not be a senator."
