DENVER (KKTV) – UPDATE 12/3/18:
11 News learned Monday night that Chris Watts had been transferred to a facility outside Colorado.
A corrections department spokesman confirmed that he would transfer but would not give more details. It is not clear why the transfer took place or where Watts is kept now. Mark Fairbairn of the Department of Corrections told 11 News that he was not sure Watts was being moved for his own safety or that of the guards. In any high profile case, it is feared that staff will be injured if other detainees target the person in custody.
Watts' wife's family and the court's attorney were informed of his new location. This became a requirement for the state after the publication of an 11 News story about the Aurora theater shooter, James Holmes. In 2018, the Colorado governor enacted a law that will give more rights to victims of crime. He says that Colorado's prison system must inform victims of the hijacking of an inmate during his transfer out of the state.
