The Costa Rican authorities discovered a body near the area where Carla Stefaniak, an American citizen, disappeared last week. The body, which has not yet been identified, was partially buried and covered with plastic near the city of San Jose, said a local official at CBS News.

Authorities are working with Stefaniak's family members to identify the body, said Marisel Rodriguez, spokeswoman for the Costa Rica's Criminal Investigation Bureau.

Stefaniak, a 36-year-old woman from Hallandale Beach, Florida, missed her flight back last Wednesday and her family has been looking for her since that day. Her sister-in-law, April Burton, said that she had heard from Stefaniak around 8 pm. last Tuesday. She said that it was raining and that the power was off.

The last message that Burton sent him was: "It's pretty blurry here." Later in the night, all communications ceased.

"It was her birthday and she loves social networks," said Stefaniak's brother, Carlos Caicedo, at CBS News. "I suppose every application that exists can be communicated. [on] – I'm sure she was there."

Caicedo said the owner of Airbnb had told him that a security guard had seen his sister get into a car with his bags at 5 am Wednesday morning. Burton said that it made no sense. "Her flight was at 1:30 pm and she was only 20-30 minutes from the airport. She's never ahead of anything."

The family says that Stefaniak was registered online for his flight and ordered an Uber to pick her up later in the morning. Airbnb told CBS News that it did not comment, and Uber said it would help local authorities.
