Other US troops could be deployed on the US-Mexico border to modernize 160 km of fences.
Three unnamed US officials told NBC News that the Department of Homeland Security has requested additional troops from Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan.
The Ministry of Defense is not affected by the partial shutdown of the government, and the cost of building a fence would come from the Pentagon's annual budget.
The Trump administration announced plans to deploy thousands of active-duty troops at the border in late October, in response to migrants crossing Mexico from the north.
These troops supported US Customs and the US border. Protective efforts by assisting with surveillance, reinforcing barriers, providing medical support and temporary housing.
