It is feared that Russia will respect Ukraine's sovereign rights over the Azov Sea in order to turn it into a Russian "interior lake" and an exclusively military zone.
In addition, the deputies of the European Union demand from Russia that it guarantee the freedom of navigation in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov, as provided by international law. If Russia does not do so, MEPs call for the closure of Russian ports access to EU ships leaving the sea of Azov.
Meanwhile, they called for the use of all diplomatic means to reduce tensions and have "welcomed the proposal for mediation between Kiev and Moscow." The resolution also calls on the OSCE and its member states to extend the mandate of the Special Monitoring Mission to the Azov Sea Region
