A EUR 500 note will be phased out of circulation due to its "involvement" in illegal transactions.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing for the issuance of a new note of EUR 100 and EUR 200 presented in September 2018.
In this regard, the Chairman of the Executive Board of the ECB, Benoit Cure, met with the French television channel Inter.
"Three types of notes have been presented: recently, a 50 euro note will soon be issued, as well as 100 and 200 euro notes." added Curie.
Moreover, according to him, the ECB has stopped issuing bank notes at 500 euros – they will gradually come out of circulation.
"We stopped printing tickets in the amount of EUR 500. They were often used to launder money and other illicit funds," explained Curie.
At the same time, citizens will not be in danger because the ECB has developed a payment system allowing banks to visit the area. Transfers in euros between individuals are literally done in seconds
As it has been reported, new notes of 100 and 200 euros will be issued with additional levels of protection against counterfeiting. This protection already has a nominal value of 5 to 50 euro banknotes.
