Evidence of hearing before the grand jury in the Mueller case is extended until six months

Special advocate Robert Mueller has apparently not yet completed his investigation of Russia's interference in the US presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. According to several media reports, a federal judge granted Mueller's request to extend the length of the evidence before the grand jury of his criminal investigation by six months.

The term of the jury, which took place in Washington in early July 2017, was about to expire this weekend. Extensions of up to six months are systematically granted if a judge is satisfied that it is in the public interest.

This grand jury, identified as being 17-1, has already made several indictments related to the investigation in the Mueller case, including charges against the former president of the Trump campaign, Paul Manafort, and former campaign MP Rick Gates. He also issued indictments against three Russian companies and 25 Russians, including several military intelligence officers, accusing them of piracy and other online activities related to the presidential election.

The extension is probably an indication that there could be more indictments. GOP politician Roger Stone and right-wing conspiracy theorist and writer Jerome Corsi, both supporters of President Donald Trump, have already said they have been threatened with prosecution by Mueller's team. The Washington Post reported in November that Corsi was in plea bargaining with Mueller.

A company owned by a foreign country, perhaps a bank, would apparently fight against a subpoena to appear before a grand jury, apparently related to Mueller's investigation. CNN reported that the challenge is now before the US Supreme Court.

Thursday's prosecutors asked a federal judge to authorize the presentation of a sealed brief regarding a "pending case before the grand jury." No details have been provided in the public request. According to Politico, the application was accepted Friday.

Attorneys have the opportunity to use a new grand jury once another jury's term expires. But there are advantages for a prosecutor to have an experienced group with extensive experience in an investigation.
