I n life, former President George H. W. Bush illustrated the kind of dignified conservatism that is sorely lacking at this time. His passing marks not only the earthly end of a great man, but also the closing of a chapter that is not likely to be repeated at a future time.
Although imperfect in his political relations, like all presidents, Bush 41 was known as one of the most authentic players on the public stage. At a time when cruelty is often applauded and taken for strength, the kind and respectful behavior of this former president is isolated.
The past two years have been marked by political wrangling and the quarrel between the 45th president and the Bush family is apparent. President Trump ridiculed both Bush Sr. and his son, President George W. Bush, as well as his fellow candidate in the 2016 campaign, Jeb Bush.
On the news of his death, the government paid homage to in tribute. It was appropriate in length and tone.
But George H.W's choice is even more telling than Trump's reaction to this political dynasty of life and death. Bush invites Trump to his funeral. This seems to be an additional measure of goodwill given the bitterness that has punctuated the recent Bush-Trump relationship, but this is not surprising for those who knew the former president.

George H. W. Bush considered the presidency to be superior to every individual. Rather than a person, it is the people's office and should, at all times, be honored and respected. He has also kept this state of mind during previous administrations.
In 2014, Bush Sr. met with President Barack Obama on the Houston tarmac during his visit. As reported Bush said, "When the president arrives in your hometown, you introduce yourself to welcome him." Even more gracious than this was the note that he had left to President Bill Clinton on the day of the inauguration in 1993. Bush had lost to the charismatic young democrat, but nothing indicated bitterness in his letter to the new chief.
"You will be our President reading this note, I wish you good, I wish your family good luck, your success now is the success of our country, I am hard on you."
In stark contrast to the "not my president" mantra of the current Left Resistance, George H. W. Bush regarded each commander-in-chief as "our president". In choosing to invite the current president (the one who has ridiculed him in the past) at his funeral, Bush displayed a constancy that has characterized his extraordinary life. His dedication to the country, despite his personal differences, served as a guide in the political quagmire.
I am sure that some wish that Trump be excluded from any memorial dedicated to George H.W. Buisson. This may disappoint those who, following the funeral decision of the late Senator John McCain, almost hoped that such public embarrassments would become widespread. If so, their frustration is a good thing.
Perhaps one day the country will be in a place where the speeches of the president and the people are full of courtesy rather than conflict. To George's credit, Bush's mandate was marked by a lack of civility.
Including Trump at his funeral, this legacy is complete.
