A police officer from DeKalb County, Georgia, was shot dead during a traffic stop on Thursday, officials said.
The fatal incident occurred after the officer attempted to stop a vehicle. The operator got out of the car and ran, DeKalb County Police Chief James Conroy told Fox. A foot chase eventually took place, during which "the suspect manufactured a handgun and shot the officer," Conroy said.
The police chief confirmed that the officer had died as a result of his injuries.
"I have bad news to report tonight," Conroy said. "Tonight, a deKalb County police officer died in the performance of his duties serving the citizens of DeKalb County."
One K-9 unit was among the investigators who eventually arrived on the scene, Conroy said. The suspect fired on the K-9 after police forces found him behind a company, said the police chief.
"Several officers fought back" at the suspect, who "received several gunshot wounds," Conroy said. , described as an adult man aged 20 to 30, also died, said the police chief.
