A Missouri community is nervous and looking for answers after the killing of four members of the same family. The violence erupted in a suburban home and then in the streets overnight.
The 911 call attendant heard several shots during the call and a hysterical woman in the background. By the time the St. Charles City Police arrived at the house, still covered with Christmas lights, they could not do anything.
Police said the scene inside was "horrible". Zoe and Jonathan Kasten, aged 8 and 10, and their grandmother, Jane Moeckel, were shot dead. Another woman was also shot and died later in the hospital.
When the police arrived, they saw a vehicle leave the area at a high speed.
Police reported attempting to arrest the person at the wheel – presumably in power. to be the suspect – which led to a shootout that left one of their cruisers riddled with bullet holes. But this does not end here.
Shortly after, a person of the same type tries to carjack a woman. The investigators said that he had stabbed the woman and then left.
After a seven-hour manhunt, the police found the suspect after learning that a man was inside the store and was bleeding.
On Saturday afternoon, prosecutors revealed that the murders were not random, but committed by Richard Emery, the 39-year-old's living boyfriend. He was arrested on 15 counts, including one of first degree murder.
"What may have someone to take the life of a child, is above me – and we may never know it," said prosecutor Tim Lohmar.
The police said that investigators are still studying what might have motivated all of this. The car theft victim will recover from his physical injuries and no police officer was injured.
