New Orleans – Authorities in Louisiana say separate but linked shots in two different parishes have killed five people. CBS affiliate WAFB-TV reported that detectives on Saturday were looking for 21-year-old Dakota Theriot, wanted for first degree murder, illegal use of weapons and invasion of his home.
Sheriff Bobby Webre, of Ascension Parish, told a press conference that deputies were summoned to a caravan in the city of Gonzales for a "domestic incident" Saturday morning. Upon their arrival, MPs found two people who had been shot dead but still alive: Elizabeth and Keith Theriot, both 51 years old. WAFB reported that the couple was shot dead in the bedroom, officials said.
The WAFB reports that MPs were able to interrogate Keith Theriot before the couple were transported to a Baton Rouge hospital where they died. From this interview, the authorities identified the couple's son, Dakota Theriot, as "our main suspect in this case". He is wanted for first degree murder and other charges.
Livingston Parish Sheriff
The sheriff said three more gun deaths occurred Saturday in the neighboring parishes of Livingston, about 70 km west of New Orleans. Livingston parish sheriff Jason Ard confirmed on Facebook that three deaths have occurred in his parish and identified the victims as Billy Ernest, 43; Tanner Ernest, 17 years old; and Summer Ernest, 20 years old.
Two minors, one 7 year old and the other one year old, were found at the scene. They are both safe, Ard said.
Webre said that the three victims had been hit first, and that he had shot his parents.
Webre testified that Theriot had lived briefly with his parents but had been asked to leave the residence and not return. Webre said that he lived briefly with Summer's parents, but that there were "no red flags".
Theriot is considered "armed and dangerous" and was driving a stolen, gray-and-gray 2004 Dodge Ram van. Ard said at a press conference last Saturday that Theriot had been seen for the last time wearing a blue sweatshirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. Has two tattoos, one on the upper right side of the chest, the second on the inside of his right forearm.
Evelyn Ernest, mother of Billy Ernst and grandmother of Tanner and Summer, told CBS News that Summer and the suspect were briefly in a romantic relationship. She said that she met Theriot only once.
Lisa Steele, spokeswoman for Sherriff's office of Livingston Parish, said that there was no motive at the moment. However, Steele said that there was reason to believe that the suspect was having a relationship with one of the victims in the parish of Livingston.
The spokeswoman of the Sheriff of Ascension, Allison Hudson, said the authorities felt that shooting in both parishes were linked and investigators from both jurisdictions were working. together.
