USB Restricted Mode pr Initiatives are primarily intended to protect against devices such as GrayKey – a hardware device used by malicious people to recover data from an iOS device. The full security feature does not provide, but complicates the hacking method.
ElcomSoft security engineers report that access to the timer can be accessed by any iPhone accessory – the timer stops when connecting these devices via Lightning port. This method gives the attacker plenty of time to bring the device to his lab and break it through the GrayKey in an old fashioned manner.
Hacking the iPhone via Lightning Any Accessory
This tip works on iOS 11.4.1 and iOS 12 beta 2, both with the USB Restricted Mode feature, according to ElcomSoft security officials.
The problem is likely to be in the Apple Lightning communication protocol. In simple terms, the iPhone "talks" with the devices that are connected to it: when a user connects an iPhone to a computer, he exchanges cryptographic keys to establish a secure connection.
However, Lightning accessories do not exchange cryptographic keys, so the iPhone simply trusts them by default.
Fixing this error can lead to the fact that many Lightning accessories will become useless and will not work with the iPhone or iPad on Firmware 11.4.1 and above.
