Pavlo Klimkin reports on talks with Hungarian Foreign Minister
Consulates of Hungary in Ukraine have ceased to grant citizenship to local residents.
He also noted that Hungary would not resume this practice. Klimkin reported it to Milan after the meetings of the Foreign Ministers, answering the question of the result of the negotiations with the Hungarian party.
As you know, Ukrainian-Ukrainian consular consultations took place in Kiev last week and on December 6, foreign ministers met in Milan. Klimkin confirmed that at these meetings, Hungary had officially agreed to terminate the previous passport practice.
Klimkin admitted that Hungarian legislation on the simplified granting of citizenship to foreign Hungarians was maintained and that the procedure could extend beyond Ukraine.
"Unfortunately, I can not guarantee that they will not try to extend the issuing of passports to the Hungarians of Transcarpathia, Hungary – we can not control their actions on the Hungarian territory But for us, the question of the absolute principle is that in their consulates they can not do this on our territory, "explained the minister.
He also said that Ukraine had proposed to Hungary to sign an agreement on the prevention of dual citizenship, but had not received the response of Budapest to his proposal.
Recall that the conflict between Budapest and Kiev erupted after the adoption of the Ukrainian Law on Education, which defines the Ukrainian language as the main educational process.
In September, the situation worsened after the broadcast of a video in which Ukrainian citizens at the Hungarian consulate in Beregov receive Hungarian passports. In exchange for an oath of allegiance to Hungary, they are asked to hide this fact from the Ukrainian authorities. Kiev's reaction to the incident was the announcement by the Hungarian consul of a non grata status. Later, a similar decision to send a Ukrainian consul was held in Budapest.
