In heavy athletics, for the first time in 20 years, categories have changed

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has approved the introduction of 10 new weight classes in the male and female ranks, according to Inside the Games.

The updated categories were developed by a panel based on scientific and statistical data. The men will be divided into the following weight categories: up to 55 kilograms, 61, 67, 73, 81, 89, 96, 102, 109 and over 100 kilograms

Women's weight categories set to day are as follows: up to 45 kilograms, up to 49, 55, 59, 64, 71, 76, 81, 87 and over 87 kilograms

In seven categories of each category are already approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to put them at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Men will perform well at these scales: up to 61 kilograms, up to 67, 73, 81, 96, 109 and over 109 kilograms, and women – up to 49 kilograms, up to 55 , at 59, 64, 76, 87 and over 87 kilograms

It is noted that the previous weight classes in weightlifting have not changed for more than 20 years.

Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian National Team of Weightlifting "cut" the quotas for the games in Tokyo 2020.
