An ice storm warning is in effect for much of the Chicago area, triggering a warning from FEMA asking motorists to stay off the road until they reach the end of the day. it expires Wednesday at 6 am because of the extreme cold
The north-south suburbs, Chicago and the northern suburbs should be a quarter of an inch. Slush and ice are expected. The last ice storm warning from the area dates back to December 2009.
The warning concerns the counties of Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, La Salle, Lake (Ill.), McHenry and Will.
The notice is effective from 18h. until midnight for Kankakee and Livingston counties in Illinois and Lake and Porter counties in Indiana.

The pack ice and freezing rain have invaded the western suburbs and the city in the afternoon and evening. Freezing rain should change to rain by midnight.
In town, salt spreaders and snow plows were turning in regular rotation, more than 300 trucks covering the city since the afternoon. The air temperature was floating around the frost, but the soil temperature was slightly warmer, a benefit.

The areas to the north and west of I-55 should know the worst of the ice storm. Ice can cause power cuts and damage to trees.
The crystalline landscape of the suburbs was dramatic and dangerous Tuesday night, which would lead us to a white ride.
"Someone almost stopped when I came in. Here, I say to myself, yes, it's time to go home," said Vanessa Stewart, a food delivery man.
Everything is covered with ice.
"It's really slippery, I fell, so I'm trying to be careful, but I'm already suffering too much, so I'm going home and calling it a night," said Stewart.

IDOT and Illinois Tollway have deployed an army of salt trucks, but they can not do much.
"The materials we deposit and the salt we deposit tends to wash quite easily, so we're going out constantly through the night," said Guy Tridgell, spokesman for IDOT .
The authorities urged people to use public transportation to get to Chicago on Wednesday to keep them away from slippery and potentially dangerous roads.

Some suburban municipalities use an organic beetroot blend to control ice. Arlington Heights, Downers Grove and other communities use this blend, which is greener and cheaper than traditional salt.
Some officials said the savings were between $ 60,000 and $ 80,000.
COMED PREPARING FOR ICE STORM
Cold power lines, however, are vulnerable to the treatment of ice sheets.
ComEd reported opening its emergency operations center and strengthening its pre-storm strength.
"ComEd has developed a plan and is ready to have the resources to respond to a weather problem," said Terence R. Donnelly, President and Chief Operating Officer of ComEd. "If our system were to have any impact, our employees would work tirelessly to quickly and safely restore customers."
