Man, woman arrested in connection with shootings involving officers on the island of Hawaii

KONA (KHON2) – The Hawaii Island police are investigating two shootings involving police officers that occurred Thursday in the Keauhou and Napoopoo Road areas.

At approximately 4:58 pm, police received a tip that the fugitive Justin Waiki was seen in a van with unknown license plates in the parking lot at 75-1015 Henry Street in Kailua-Kona.

The truck was last seen heading west on Henry Street. The agents immediately responded and started to check the vehicle.

At approximately 5:19 pm, the officers located a vehicle corresponding to the description. The vehicle was first parked on Makolea Street in the area above Kahaluu Beach and then moved to the upper parking lot at 78-6725 Makolea Street (Kahaluu Housing).

Police said they approached the vehicle and observed a man sitting in the driver's seat and a female person in the passenger seat. The officers gave verbal orders to the occupants when the man first drove to the agents and returned to the lawn in front of the housing complex

Officers continued to pursue the vehicle towards Napoopoo Road, during which another officer positioned his vehicle on the road. of his vehicle when the suspect vehicle approached the location of the agent. When the suspect vehicle approached the position of the agent, the suspect drove the vehicle in the direction of the agent. The officer unloaded 10 shots at the suspect vehicle, but the vehicle continued to flee towards Middle Keei Road

The vehicle was eventually abandoned in a private coffee field on Keala Makua Square in Honaunau.

The two occupants then fled the immediate area on foot in the lava fields and the thick brush. Extensive searches were conducted in the area and two suspects were found and detained without further incident.

Suspicious vehicle checks revealed that the truck had stolen registration plates and that the truck had been stolen earlier in the day. The suspects are identified as Harvey Damo Jr. and Shevylyn Klaus, both 25, and Hilo.

Officials did not say if the suspects were related to Waiki

Damo received medical treatment at the Kona Community Hospital for a non-fatal bullet wound. He was released from the hospital and, along with Klaus, remains in custody at Kealakehe Police Station pending further investigation by the detectives from Zone 2 Criminal Investigation Section.
