Michelle Obama criticized the strategy of "streamlining" the director of Facebook's operation, calling it inadequate for women seeking to excel in their careers.

Obama's comments do not constitute the first criticism of Sandberg's approach, accused of suggesting that women must be the individual solution to inequality at the workplace rather than to extensive policy changes.
In a study this year, a group of psychology professors from Duke University used 2,000 participants to test the "light" approach and how it works against the structural and systemic disadvantages women are confronted in the workplace.
A group of women read excerpts from "Lean In" and listened to excerpts from Sandberg's TED interviews that focused on building women's confidence in the office.
The researchers concluded at the end of the trial that women could end the inequalities in the place of work, but "were also more likely to believe that women are responsible for the problem – both to provoke it and to solve it."

Sandberg criticized the fact that his book was left out of favor. In 2016, women told CBS: "I do not really understand how difficult it is to succeed at work when you are overwhelmed at home."
