Michigan: A family of five killed in an accident in Kentucky

A suspected drunk driver heading in the wrong direction on Interstate 75 in Kentucky struck a vehicle carrying five members of the Michigan family early on Sunday, killing them six people, announced the authorities.

A truck driving in northbound lanes hit the family's SUV at 2:30 am in Lexington. The sport utility vehicle caught fire and the five occupants of this vehicle died, as well as the driver of the pickup truck, Lexington police said in a statement.

The family of Northville, Michigan, was returning from vacation to Florida, the Fayette County Coroner's Office announced.

Witness Kenneth DeGraaf told WLEX-TV that the van was joining him before the accident.

"I thought I saw something, honestly," said DeGraaf. "He was in the center lane, I was in the center lane, I had to merge at the last second to go in the right lane, I mean, he was flying.

A coroner statement identifying family members as Issam Abbas, 42; Rima Abbas, 38; Ali Abbas, 41 years old; Isabella Abbas, 13, and Giselle Abbas, 7 years old.

The driver of the white van was identified as Joey Lee Bailey, 41, of Georgetown. According to the coroner's statement, the authorities believe that Bailey was driving under the influence and that toxicology tests were planned.

The highway was closed for several hours. The accident is still under investigation.

According to the Dearborn Islamic Center of America, Michigan, the funeral of the family is scheduled for Tuesday at the center. 75, a bustling north-south corridor crossing the middle section of the country, from south Florida to the US border with Canada.
