NEW YORK – In a widely seen video, a mother who had her child fired by New York police said in an interview published Sunday that she had gone into "defense mode".
"In my head I told myself they would not let me go," Jazmine Headley told The New York Times. "I was so scared. I was combative with my thoughts. "
The video shows the chaotic scene that took place on December 7 as police were trying to remove Headley from a crowded Brooklyn social services office , where she sat on the floor for a moment, two hours for lack of chairs.
The police were called when she refused the order of a security officer. Headley told The Times that she was sitting on the floor, her back to the wall, and talking to her son, who was in a stroller, she refused, pointing out the bins and recycling bins against the wall located on the other side of his son's stroller.
"I just remember being very fiercely talked about," she said. "It was more or less: "You're going to do what I say, and that's all."
Headley said that his memory of the incident was unclear. she had taken her son and that she had been trying to leave after one of the police had said that they did not want to stop him. Police said that one of the guards then seized the arm of the 23-year-old mother, who had collapsed to the ground.
Headley said that she had again tried to leave but a policeman had told her that it was too late.
"I left and did not do it because if I had left, my son would not have what he needed," Headley said.
The two security guards were placed on modified service. Guards union president Gregory Floyd said they had been trying to reason Headley for 40 minutes before the police arrived. He added that one of the guards had been bitten during the showdown.
Both officers are still on active duty.
