A major storm that disrupts travel unlocks snow and ice from Tennessee to North Carolina and Virginia.

AccuWeather meteorologists claim that the heaviest snowfall will occur from the southern Appalachians in western Piedmont to North Carolina and southern Virginia. Snowfall of 12 to 18 inches is expected, especially in the mountains of North Carolina with a 24-inch AccuWeather Local StormMax ™.

Travel will probably be completely stopped in these areas until the roads are clear.

At least 6 inches of snow was reported in Durham County, North Carolina, early Sunday morning.


Even though the worst storm passed Monday, schools could be closed earlier this week because of the bad road.

11:15 am EST Sunday:

There have been more than 500 collisions and over 1,000 service calls in North Carolina to date, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol . Officials continue to urge people to stay at home until conditions improve.


10:02 EST Sunday:

Deicing operations are underway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Despite the storm, the Federal Aviation Administration is not reporting a significant delay in incoming and outgoing Charlotte traffic.

Elsewhere in Charlotte, a train is stuck in the transit system of the Charlotte area because of the cherry.

Heavy and wet snow causes the aircraft to be damaged. Sagging tree limbs and breaking, which could cause property damage and blackouts until Sunday.

Flight delays and Cancellations are increasing in the eastern United States due to the major winter storm with the cancellation of all American Airlines and Southwest Airlines flights departing from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

As the storm releases heavy snow into the interior of the region, breaking waves cause coastal flooding and other disruption of movement.

The sun rises in the north Caroline and residents wake up on snowy roads.

Travel conditions deteriorated overnight, with the authorities recommending to avoid driving unless it was absolutely necessary.

Some places in the mountains of western North Carolina have already accumulated more than a foot of snow and more accumulation is expected today.

Power outages have increased to more than 160,000 customers in the Carolinas, according to poweroutage.us.

If you drive and arrive at an intersection where the lights are off, consider treating it as a four-way stop.

Among the heaviest snowfall recorded so far in North Carolina, we find 13 inches in Translyvania, 9 inches in Haywood and Polk, 5 inches in Kernersville and 4.8 inches to Purnell. The snow continues to fall in these areas.
