I was going to start this post by describing the different ways in which Nathan Phillips – the Amerindian activist involved in a brawl between Catholic high school students in Washington, DC – described his years in the Marine Corps.
I was going to argue his embarrassing claims of "military recognition" – which he was not. I was going to think about his claim that he was a "veteran of the Vietnam era" who came home and who was "spit on" and "called a baby killer", in despite his record keeping him in the United States, which is not clear.
The claims would have been questioned, but his story of simply being a "veteran of Vietnam" would have been outside the realm of stolen value.
But then, another video appeared.
Many news organizations first described Phillips as a veteran of Vietnam, until they were forced to publish corrections. Well, they're going to need to issue some more, because Phillips apparently would have slipped into 2018 and allegedly said he was "a veteran of Vietnam" and that he was "on the theater "during the war – which is categorically wrong.
Here's the full quote from a Phillips video posted on the Native Youth Alliance's Facebook page (brand 9:45):
"I'm a Vietnam veterinarian, you know," said Phillips. "I served in the Marine Corps from 1972 to 1976. I was released on May 5, 1976. I had an honorable release and one of the boxes that I had. it contains indicates if you were in peacetime or … what my box says i was in the theater.I do not speak much of my vietnamese era.I usually say, "i do not remember. I do not remember, "you know, those years."
In the same video, at about 11:45 pm, he says, "I'm at home under section 8 because I'm a veteran of the war like this, Honorable, in the theater, I have section 8 at home. "
Phillips served in the Marine Corps from May 20, 1972 to May 5, 1976, according to a spokesman. Body word, but has not served anywhere near Vietnam or a theater of war. He had no deployment and his only reward was a medal from the National Defense Service. He briefly had the military specialty specialty 0351, anti-tank missile man, before being assigned as a refrigeration technician at 1161.
He is also released after four years of service.
