An explosion in a New York power plant Thursday evening illuminated the sky with a mysterious blue light – and sparked a wave of speculation on social media.

Some wondered if aliens had landed.

Others thought that something supernatural could be at the origin of the ghostly glow.

Others wondered if the hand of God was at work over New York. A new pope, or the moment when evangelicals say that true believers are swept to heaven or "kidnapped",

The New York Police Department appealed to Twitter to reassure the public that Strange light had been caused by something much more serious to Earth – a transformer explosion in a Con Edison power plant, in the Astoria district, in Queens (UK).

And Con Edison sheds light on the cause of the excitement.
