NEW YORK – The jurors completed Monday their fifth day of deliberations without verdict in the US trial of the famous Mexican drug chief Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
The Brooklyn Federal Court jury remained silent. almost the whole day before sending two notes to the judge. One of them asked to examine the testimonies of the forces of order on the Colombian cocaine seizures shipped in the Sinaloa cartel in order to feed a smuggling empire that , according to the prosecutors, was under the command of Guzman.
The elements of the most important plot of the case are counting on a verdict on this. They were told that they needed a complete agreement on at least three of these items.
The second note was the first whiff of disagreement in the jury room. According to most signs, the jurors took a methodical approach to rendering their verdicts on 10 different charges after hearing testimony at the trial that lasted nearly three months.
Guzman, 61, was extradited to the United States in 2017 for the trial, which could end in life. The defense accused prosecutors of making him a scapegoat for their own crimes.
Guzman again appeared optimistic during a brief court appearance on Monday. He smiled as he shook hands with his lawyers and greeted his wife, who was at his usual place in the gallery, wearing a bright yellow blazer.
Proceedings will resume on Tuesday.
